After a hard-fought battle with lung cancer, and doing it entirely on her own terms, Laurie Smith passed away in the arms of her beloved husband, Roy, proving once again that she would exit this world exactly how she lived in it: strong, stubborn, and surrounded by love.
She retired from Anheuser-Busch and relocated to the wonderful community of Oceanside Village, where she spent the remainder of her days laughing in the sunshine with the love of her life, teaching water aerobics, and keeping everyone on their toes with her sharp wit and unapologetic honesty. If you knew her, you knew she never sugar-coated a thing, and somehow you loved her more for it.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 30 years, Roy Smith; her six children, Lynora Virginia, Rita Powers, Crystal (Justin) Harrington, Elizabeth (Greg) Cooper, Josh Smith, and Joelle (Mike) Mohr; many grandchildren; and one very special great-granddaughter, all of whom held a very special place in her heart (even if she didn’t always say it sweetly).
In true “Mom” fashion, her Celebration of Life will not be your typical quiet gathering. She loved the Oceanside Village dances, so it is only fitting that we celebrate her the same way, with music, laughter, and maybe a little sass.
Please join us on March 28th from 6-10pm at the Oceanside Village Community Center located at 2011-2039 Dipper, Myrtle Beach, SC 29575 for a dance in her honor. Wear red and/or black (as fancy or casual as you wish), bring your stories, and come ready to celebrate a woman who lived loudly, loved fiercely, and never did anything halfway.
Cremation Services Direct (843-651-1194) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is assisting the family with the arrangements.
